Meet Our New Mare, after the rain!

2018 is nearly in the rear view mirror, and breeding season will soon be upon us. We thought we'd share some impressions of our new mare, After the Rain, and take a look at her pedigree, with an eye towards 2020 when we expect her first foal by Value Plus.

Already a Stakes Producer!

Rain is already a stakes producer: she's the dam of 2018 stakes winner Call It a Wrap, by Finality. Call It a Wrap won the CTHS Sales S. and placed 3rd in the Jack Diamond Futurity S., both at Hastings Racecourse. She's in the prime of life (will be 12 Jan. 1) and is a big, well-made mare with a kind eye. She quickly let us know how much she likes peppermints! She has fit right in here as our latest acquisition that we believe adds a new level of diversity to our small broodmare band.

Family of Arrogate

Rain offers an incredible family line. She shares the same fourth dam as Arrogate (Unbridled’s Song), Inreality Star. Inreality Star is the dam of Champion 2 Yr. Filly, Meadow Star. For this reason alone, we are excited to revisit the Unbridled's Song/Inreality Star family cross, by breeding After the Rain to our Unbridled’s Song stallion, Value Plus.

Emulating Unbridled’s Song/Blushing Groom Cross

Another goal we have with breeding Value Plus to Rain is to emulate the cross that produced likely 2018 2 yr. Filly Champion Jaywalk, and Value Plus’ 2018 G1SW and millionaire, Long On Value. Jaywalk is by Unbridled's Song's 2018 Leading Freshman Sire son, Cross Traffic, from the Orientate mare, Lady Pewitt. If you look at Long On Value's lineage, he is by Value Plus, from an Orientate mare. Orientate was a Champion Sprinter and grandson of Blushing Groom.

Our 2020 Value Plus x After the Rain foal will also follow the Unbridled's Song on top /Blushing Groom on the bottom pattern. This time, the Blushing Groom will come through Rain's broodmare sire, Champion Sprinter, Cherokee Run. Cherokee Run is a top son of Runaway Groom (Blushing Groom), the Canadian Champion, Hall of Famer, and sire, who was bred in Ontario by Gardiner Farms Ltd.

Substance & Quality via Lemon Drop Kid

In addition, Rain offers a lot of quality through her sire, perennial leading sire and broodmare sire, Lemon Drop Kid. Our foal will be in good company, as Lemon Drop Kid has already built a solid reputation as the broodmare sire of 55 stakes winners. In 2018, among his stakes winners as a broodmare sire, is the G1SW Frankel horse, Without Parole, bred and owned by John D. and Tanya Gunther.

Lemon Drop Kid's daughters have also produced champion Forever Unbridled, her stakes winning sister Unbridled Forever, and Tamarkuz (Without Parole’s half brother, also bred by John D. Gunther).

2019 is the Perfect Time to Breed to Value Plus

Are you getting as excited as we are about the potential of the Unbridled's Song and Blushing Groom cross? Maybe you're a big fan of Lemon Drop Kid, and want to breed a mare by him to Value Plus - a proven G1 speed sire!

Not only does Value Plus offer a superb opportunity to access the blood of the great Unbridled’s Song, his dam, Roll Over Baby, is the second dam of the hot 2018 graded stakes winning and G1SP filly, Mia Mischief! This is a live family that continues to produce quality runners.

Here’s a bonus: Value Plus is a perfect outcross – he carries no Northern Dancer, Tapit, A.P. Indy or other strains of Bold Ruler through 5 generations.

In 2018 Value Plus’ first BC-bred foals arrived, and they’ve grown into exceptional individuals with a lot of substance, bone and quality.

You can definitely see why we’re excited to breed After the Rain to Value Plus!

We invite you to consider Value Plus in your 2019 breeding plans. A G1 stakes performer at 2 and 3, he fits with a variety of bloodlines and when you view him in person, you'll like what you see.
