June has been a terrific month for Value Plus; Unbridled’s Song’s best son in Canada! Value Plus sired his first millionaire, as the MGSW Long On Value, won the Mighty Beau Overnight Stakes at Churchill Downs, June 2. Long on Value was purchased for $100,000 at the Keeneland November sale in 2017 by Brad Cox, via Liz Crow of ELiTe Sales. Long on Value is currently owned by Madaket Stables LLC, Ten Strike Racing and Steve Laymon.
June 30 brings even more excitement as Long On Value is slated to start in the G1 Highlander Stakes at Woodbine. If he should take this race, it will be his first Grade 1 win! The Highlander has additional significance, as it is a Breeders’ Cup ‘Win and You’re In’ race!
We've collected some of the most exciting tweets about Long On Value's big night - enjoy them with us here! Click the photos to go to the tweet on Twitter!
Our 2018 foal crop has delighted us – such beautiful foals, each with a super personality! We absolutely love our first BC-bred Value Plus foal, ‘Phil’, born in early February, and our last two foals complete a really stellar group.
On February 23 our mare Gift Wrap foaled an exceptional colt by Maclean's Music; he the sire of 2017 Preakness Stakes (G1) winner, Cloud Computing, in his first crop.
While Cloud Computing is his standout runner so far, Maclean's Music has sired many other solid racehorses; including 8 SWs and 15 SHs. He ranks as #1 3rd Crop Sire, by those statistics. Nationally, Maclean's Music ranked as the #7 Second Crop Sire in 2017, and he is presently the #11 Third Crop Sire, overall. Having only raced once, before retiring due to an injury, Maclean's Music flashed sensational talent, winning a maiden special weight at Santa Anita by 7 3/4 lengths.
When Cloud Computing won the 2017 Preakness Stakes, his many supporters took to social media, celebrating their belief in the stallion:
Maclean’s Music is by the top stallion Distorted Humor, who was Leading Broodmare Sire of 2017. Between his sire, Distorted Humor, and his paternal grandsire, Forty Niner, Maclean's Music traces to a potent sire line that is responsible for nearly 200 stakes winners. This is a powerful branch of the mighty Mr. Prospector line, responsible for many of today’s top racehorses and breeding stock.
We are incredibly excited about the nick that our colt has, as it is the same Distorted Humor/A.P. Indy cross that produced Cloud Computing, and 9% black type stakes winners! Our foal's dam, Gift Wrap, by Sky Mesa, was a hard knocking mare that consistently hit the board, with a record of 43-2-10-13. She earned over $125,000 and won at a mile or more, multiple times. The sky's the limit for Kevin! We're hoping he has the potential to become another in the long line of stakes winners resulting from this cross!
Our second BC-bred Value Plus foal, 'Kyle,' foaled on March 18, reinforced our belief in Value Plus; as he stamps his foals with obvious quality. This sire of 20 black type stakes horses and near-millionaire, MGSW Long on Value, passes on the class of his sire, the great Unbridled's Song. Value Plus currently ranks as the top Unbridled's Song sire in Canada, and is currently #12 on the 2018 Canadian Turf Sires list, and #14 on the 2018 Leading Canada Sires by AEI list, after having finished at #12 on the Canadian General Sires List in 2017.
Kyle is from our Alphabet Soup mare, Flight Path. This mare won multiple times at at least one mile; with one of her victories coming at 1 mile and 70 yards. With Value Plus' superb racing record; MGSP and G1SP (in the Futurity at Belmont Park and the Florida Derby at Gulfstream), and our mare's ability to carry her speed over a mile, Kyle has an excellent chance to do well on the track.
2018 blessed us with three terrific foals; two of which validated our belief in Value Plus as a sire, and the other, our belief in Maclean's Music, who has since gone on to sire a classic winner and multiple stakes winners. The future looks bright, and as we watch our new foals grow and develop, we can't help but feel excited about their future prospects!

We’re sure you’ll agree these youngsters have a lot to offer.
By MGSW & Black Type Sire Gottcha Gold
Our horses' sire is MGSW Gottcha Gold; he is a half-brother to G1SP American Freedom! As a racehorse, Gottcha Gold was top class: he won stakes at 3, 4, and 5, including the G3 Philip Iselin Handicap. Gottcha Gold won $1,258,000 CDN and was first/second in 11 stakes, including the then G1 Pimlico Special & the G1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. Gottcha Gold ranks among the leading Canadian stallions and offers the speed and class of the Mr. Prospector line through his sire, Coronado's Quest. Gottcha Gold has sired over 6% black type horses/starter lifetime!
Strong Dam Lines Add to These Youngsters’ Quality
Kesse's dam, See You Again, is by the great Holy Bull, he a top sire and outstanding broodmare sire. He is the broodmare sire of champion Judy the Beauty and good sire, Munnings. See You Again has had two foals to race, both winners. Kesse's family also includes a number of additional black type stakes winners.
Hilariously Naughty, like Kesse, also shows the promise and talent of her sire. Her family is strong, with her dam, I'mNaughtyandnice, a SW; and half sister to Grooms Derby, another black type SW. She has had two foals to race, and 1 winner. The family includes several additional black type stakes winners and stakes-placed horses. I'mNaughtyandnice is by Straight Man (MGSP and G1SP), a son of the top sire Saint Ballado.

Feburary 6 marked a very special occasion at Stride Away Thoroughbreds. It was the long-awaited birth of Value Plus’ first British Columbia-bred foal! Nicknamed “Phil”, he comes with quite an origin story! Follow along with us as we relive the events leading up to the mating that produced this wonderful colt!
Value Plus was acquired by Stride Away Thoroughbreds from the Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed Sale on Feb. 7, 2017. Nearly a year to the day later, his first British Columbia-bred foal was born at Stride Away Thoroughbreds, from our mare, Finality Philly. We thought this blog post would be a great way for people to not only get to know Phil, but also get to know our stallion Value Plus, and the dam. So much goes into planning a mating, and the backstory of this foal's parents is really a story about how we are dedicated to producing quality thoroughbreds here on our British Columbia farm.
In 2017 we were thrilled to have the opportunity to purchase a stallion of the caliber of Value Plus. He has sired the earners of over $13,000,000, including 20 Black Type Stakes horses, and a top-class MGSW, G1-placed Long on Value. Long on Value is a world-class racehorse. His Grade 1 third place finish came to Champion Turf Male World Approval in 2017's Woodbine Mile. Whether one wants to breed for speed, for a dirt or turf runner, or for a horse that can run in good company at any track in the country, Value Plus offers a lot of sire power. He's currently ranked as the best son of Unbridled's Song standing in Canada. As a racehorse, Value Plus set a new track record in the Artax Handicap at Gulfstream Park; blazing the 7.5 furlongs in 1:28 2/5. He was also G1 placed in the Futurity at Belmont and the Florida Derby.
Today Value Plus is an eager breeder who’s all business in the breeding shed. He is a dream to handle and a bit of a ham, too. He looks striking – very like his sire, Unbridled’s Song. We couldn’t be happier with his quality and his disposition.
Finality Philly offers a similar background - her quality and courage were demonstrated throughout a tenacious racing career. Rising through the claiming ranks to a multiple stakes-placed resumé on the track (including third place finishes in the Black Type British Columbia Oaks and Hong Kong Jockey Club Handicap), she showed us a competitiveness that we admired. We originally bred and raised her, intending to sell her as a yearling. Instead we traded her for a broodmare, then later re-connected with her via a foal-sharing deal. After that we brought her home here to the farm where she is showing us the same quality as a broodmare, that she demonstrated as a racer. She has a very nice three year old, Anzac Day, who we believe will have a big year at the races in 2018.
With a family tree like this, it's no wonder the foal resulting from the mating of Value Plus & Finality Philly has that same gritty determination and intelligence. Phil's just a few weeks old, but he shows signs of fire and competitiveness just like his sire and dam!
First, second and a third for Value Plus progeny.Federal Reserve went gate to wire in the finale, ridden by Carlos Montalvo, trained by Walter Woodard. Gulfstream park 12/22/2017.Falina's Song ,2nd at Gulfstream Park. Ms. Scarlet Fever, 3rd, at Tampa Bay Downs (optional claiming price $100.000)
Value Plus' MGSW Long on Value has earned nearly $1,000,000! He's been a graded stakes performer every year he's raced! The 6 yo h most recently was G1P to World Approval in the Woodbine Mile and sold for $100,000
Stride Away Thoroughbreds has announced that the Armstrong, British Columbia-based farm will be standing graded stakes performer Value Plus for the 2017 breeding season. A stakes winner of $414,595 who placed in three graded stakes – including seconds in the Futurity Stakes (G1) at two and the Florida Derby (G1) at three – Value Plus is one of 118 stakes winners – which also includes inaugural Pegasus World Cup (G1) winner and champion Arrogate – sired by breed shaper Unbridled’s Song.
A full brother to Phoenix Stakes (G3) winner Sing Baby Sing and Grade 2-placed Werblin, Value Plus is one of four stakes winners produced out of stakes winner Roll Over Baby, by Rollin On Over.
Among Value Plus’s 23 stakes horses (eight percent from starters) is Twilight Derby (G2) winner Long On Value, stakes winner and Santa Anita Oaks (G1) runner-up All Due Respect and graded stakes-placed Our Champion and Mama Juana. His progeny have won over 650 races and have earnings of over $12.6-million.
2015 Washington champion two-year-old filly My Heart Goes On is out of a winning Value Plus mare.
Value Plus will stand the 2017 breeding season for a fee of $2,500 (Canadian) Live Foal, which includes a $500 booking fee. Special consideration will be given to multiple mares, stakes-producing mares or stakes winners or stakes-placed mares. For more information, visit to strideawayacres.com
